Over “60” National & International FESTIVAL Participations with “35” AWARDS

“…The scenes and characters that Osman Şahin delineates are so dramatically vivid that he has left his mark as a natural scenarist. His technique is akin to cinéma vérité, but he also gives his readers an in-depth gaze into the inner landscapes of peasants or the proletariat in general. Significantly Şahin is also one of Turkey’s leading scenarists!

He has so far written scripts for thirtyone films, twenty-three of which have been produced. These films have won a total of at least 35 awards in Turkey and abroad….

Şahin has personally earned the Lifetime Achievement Awards of the Ankara International Film Festival and the Antalya Film Festival.

His literary awards include some of Turkey’s most prestigious - the Sait Faik Abasıyanık, Ömer Seyfettin, Yunus Nadi (twice) prizes and several others...”

Der Spiegel, West Germany

PLOT DESCRIPTION

Der Spiegel reflects the sad existence of a village couple, Necmetting and Zelihan, whose lives are regulated by nature and the all-powerful feudal lord. When the lord's good-looking brother tries to seduce beautiful Zelihan, her husband has no choice but take up arms to restore his lost honor. But the question of whether anything can be more important than human life haunts him. Der Spiegel is a psychological drama that focuses on a menage-a-trois and at the same time holds a mirror to the generally ignored lives of the poor peasants, examning their loves, passions and dreams, particularly those of the women. Despite the theatricality of the dream sequences and the scene with the slaughter of a cow, the story generally flows easily in a minimalist style, with impressive photography by Kenan Ormanlar. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, All Movie Guide

REVIEW by TIME OUT LONDON

Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

Based on The White Ox by Osman Sahin, this unrelenting Turkish moral tale (punctuated with many charged silences) was shot in Greece as a German-British co-production. Its theme is the mind-bending effects of extreme poverty. A rich young aga leaves the love gift of a mirror for the wife of a peasant. The husband murders the shy suitor with his wife's forced compliance, and buries his remains beneath the impacted earth of his ox's byre, which is half the couple's one-room home. However, the memory of the gift remains immovably lodged in the woman's mind. Spare, disquieting, and other-worldly.

Firar, 1984, Director: Serif Goren

a k a “THE ESCAPE

PLOT DESCRIPTION

This standard story of a woman's ill-fated existence starts when she stabs her loser, common-law husband to death after she discovers he has been married to another woman all along. Ayse (Hulya Koxyigit) gets thrown in jail for her crime, but following the maxim that a prisoner's first duty is to escape, she seduces one of the guards and through his complicity is soon out and free and eventually working as a cook in a mining camp. There she starts a liaison with the foreman of the mine and just when life seems to have settled down a little, the prison guard shows up and she has to get out of there fast. Her objective is to reach her two daughters -- still a dangerous choice because she is a hunted woman, and the police are well aware of her family connections.

Derman (aka REMEDY),1983, Director: Serif Goren

PLOT DESCRIPTION

In an uneven but visually evocative drama, Turkish director Serif Goren captures the story of Muruvvet (Hulya Kocyigit), a midwife who is traveling from the city of Ankara to work at a medical center in a remote town. The season is winter, and when her bus is trapped by accumulating snow, she is forced to find shelter with a local family. In the morning, she tries to leave again but it is hopeless -- the snow has become too deep. Muruvvet decides to spend the winter in the village, partly because of the impossible roads and partly because she has become attracted to Sehmuz (Tarik Akan), a man hunted by the police for killing the murderer of his wife and children. Muruvvet and Sehmuz are aware that the police may catch up with him one day -- and so their relationship and decisions have an added stress that will have to eventually be resolved. For the rest of the film, events and plot twists are not as well scripted as in the first half, although the photography and acting is excellent throughout. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

AVCI (aka THE HUNTER), 1998, Director: Erden Kiral

PLOT DESCRIPTION

Erden Kiral directed this Turkish-Hungarian drama based on a popular legend and beginning with newlyweds and a wedding party crossing a swamp by canoe. As told by an elderly couple with different accounts, the tale punctuates fairytale-like atmospherics with explicit sex scenes. The old man tells the tale of Osman the Noble (Ahmet Ugurlu), who loves his attractive wife Zala (Jale Arikan) and travels with her back to her native town when shelter during a rainstorm brings them together with a young hunter (Fikret Kuskan). Zala and the hunter have a mutual attraction that turns to passion. Osman kills the hunter and loses Zala. In the old woman's version, the man the couple meets is a robber, who tricks Osman into a deep well and rapes Zala. She pushes him down the well and leaves. Shown at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

KAN (aka BLOOD), 1985, Director: Serif Goren

PLOT DESCRIPTION

Barbarism rides again in this shoddy Turkish Western where a blood feud is about to eliminate entire families. The fighting starts when one tribal leader rides in to visit a rival clan and while there, he is mortally offended when they cut off his horse's tail. His reaction, apparently inspired not just by testosterone but by tribal law, is to kill his horse and then murder his host as well. This sets off a series of attacks and counter-attacks where revenge is the sole motivation for the bloodshed. Feminists or not, most people would take offense at the casual way in which the hero's wife is murdered on his orders, a culturally acceptable act which receives no hint of criticism in this film.

~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

KURBAGALAR (FROGS),1985, Director: Serif Goren

PLOT DESCRIPTION

In this well-photographed drama from director Serif Goren, a young Turkish widow (Hulya Kocyigit) lives near the Greek border and goes to work in the rice fields after her husband is murdered. She tries to make a living for herself and her young son, ignoring the male workers who obviously lust after her in spite of the fact she is newly widowed. When a former suitor returns after he is released from prison, her life becomes even more complicated. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
